In 1997, the Transplant Awareness Committee asked William Johnson, a London, Ontario artist, to design a medal that could be given to donor families as well as living donors. The purpose of the medal was to recognize the lifesaving gift of donation, and many transplant programs across the country now present this medal to living donors and donor families.
Since its inception, London Health Sciences Centre has led the creation, development, and stewardship of this vital program, which honours the incredible generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families. For over 25 years, LHSC has helped ensure that the contributions of donors are recognized with compassion and respect, offering a tangible symbol of gratitude through the medal.
As of July 2025, Canadian Blood Services will assume responsibility for the distribution and administration of the National Organ Donor Recognition Medal. We are honoured to carry this program forward and will ensure it continues to reflect the values of dignity, gratitude, and respect that it was built upon. We deeply acknowledge and thank LHSC for their vision, dedication, and national leadership in establishing and nurturing this meaningful initiative. Their legacy will remain a foundational part of this program's continued success.
