Interprovincial organ sharing (IPOS) programs allow for more and better-quality transplant opportunities for transplant candidates and living organ donors.

Thanks to the Canadian Transplant Registry (CTR), waiting transplant candidates are matched with donors from all provinces, vastly expanding the available donor pool for medically urgent, highly sensitized and specific paediatric population groups. Ultimately providing them with national access to improve equity and transplant opportunities.

The goals that drive IPOS programs ensure:

• Medical needs of transplant candidates are met to ensure health and quality of life. 
• Equity for high need candidate groups who are disadvantaged due to medical or demographic gain additional priority to donor organs (e.g. highly sensitized, O blood group, paediatrics, clusters, etc.).
• Optimize the use of limited resources.
• Minimize logistics and streamline interprovincial sharing operations.
• Standardize interprovincial sharing of terminology, policies, data, and workflows.
• Evidence Based decision making when deciding on adoption of principles, rules, algorithms, or other matters requires current and best peer-reviewed evidence
