Module 5: Patient- and Family-centred Care of Critically Ill Patients who are Potential Organ Donors in the ICU Setting

Module 5: Patient- and Family-centred Care of Critically Ill Patients who are Potential Organ Donors in the ICU Setting

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the needs of families at different times in the donation process
  • Offer communication strategies and support tailored to these needs.

The information in this chapter is supported by literature, by expert opinion, and, most importantly, by interviews with family members who have been directly involved in decision-making related to organ donation and subsequent events.  It incorporates their experiences, the problems they encountered, and the approaches they have suggested.

This curriculum has been developed by Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with Trillium Gift of Life Network, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and many generous volunteers from the Canadian Critical Care community.

Learners can submit certificates of completion for professional accreditation or continuing education units.
