Quand
Virtual Conference

Event details

A short documentary film that seeks to spark conversations within the Black community about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

About this event

African Americans make up one of the largest group of minorities in need of an organ transplant in the United States, yet only 39% have registered as organ donors.

The film showcases African American Donate Life champions impacted by donation from a myriad of backgrounds and experiences, while candidly unpacking the issues of lingering mistrust in healthcare institutions in the African American community. As the first content offering of its kind, Donor Network West has the opportunity to amplify this important film as a platform for igniting conversations and driving donor designations within the African American community to give hope to those waiting for a second chance at life.

As the first short film offering by Donor Network West, We Speak Life seeks to facilitate more conversations within the African American community about healthy activities and preventative care to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and how organ and tissue donation can help save and heal lives. The film is also a call to action to encourage more African Americans to register to become organ donors.

The We Speak Life short film was conceived following the success of Donor Network West’s groundbreaking campaign, Giving Me Life, a photography and multimedia exhibition depicting the visual testimonials of nine African American transplant recipients from the San Francisco Bay Area, who overcame incredible obstacles in their respective journeys towards health and wellness thanks to the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation. The exhibition sought to elevate the lives of African Americans and affirm that #BlackLivesMatter in the realm of organ and tissue donation for transplantation.
