Learning objectives

  1. List pretransfusion test results (antibody detection test/screen, direct antiglobulin test and eluate) consistent with drug-induced Immune hemolytic anemia.
  2. Discuss categories of drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia (DIIHA).
  3. Distinguish drug-dependent antibodies from warm or cold autoantibodies using patient clinical and medication history to determine dosage and timing of drug in relation to patient hemolysis.
  4. Describe testing performed to confirm drug-dependent antibody.
  5. List the most common drugs causing DIIHA.

The LearnTransfusion series is the seminar component of the Areas of Focused Competency (AFC)-Diploma Program in Transfusion Medicine. The series, organized by Canadian Blood Services, is also open to all practitioners in the field of Transfusion Medicine. Through a series of regular webinars, trainees and practitioners are exposed to various scientific, technical and clinical aspects of transfusion medicine.
