Event details

Open discussion with case studies to be presented by AABB’s accreditation team. AABB standards and actual descriptions from assessment summary reports with documented nonconformances and objective evidence will be highlighted. The speakers will then expand the discussion on tools used to prevent future nonconformances. Finally, AABB staff will discuss AABB resources for continuous process improvement.

Presented by

  • Director/Moderator: Elizabeth Crowe, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology, Blood Bank Medical Director, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD

  • Speaker: Nabiha Huq Saifee, MD, PhD, Transfusion Service Medical Director and Associate Medical Director, Apheresis, Seattle Children's Hospital; Associate Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Learning objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the clinical indications for transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma in neonatal and pediatric patients, with emphasis on high-risk scenarios such as massive hemorrhage and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • Evaluate key clinical trials and current evidence than inform transfusion thresholds in neonatal and pediatric populations.
  • Identify the spectrum and frequency of transfusion-related adverse events in neonatal and pediatric populations and apply strategies for prevention and management.
  • Discuss the utility of non-invasive tissue oxygenation monitoring as an adjunct to hemoglobin thresholds for guiding individualized red blood cell transfusion decisions in pediatric patients.
