Objectives

1. To understand the association between demographic changes and blood donation numbers To become aware that the baby boom generation who is currently donating most whole blood donations will leave the donor pool within the next 10-15 years.
2. To learn that transfusion demand depends more on changes in medical practice than on demographic changes.
3. To understand why regular monitoring of blood donation numbers and transfusion demand in different age groups is important for strategic planning to secure the future transfusion demand.
